Volkswagen GTI Grilles

Forgive the ribbon up top – this isn’t so much of a Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there’s a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it’s largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you’re a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you’ll want to look at.

Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

Volkswagen’s product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that’s probably because a) you’re old and b) the Beetle was the company’s only product until the mid-50s.

Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a “Beetle in a sports coat.” A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.

It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Comments

UK judge imposes jumction on scientists who want to publish vehicle security codes.

Three university scientists from England and the Netherlands figured out how to unlock and start Volkswagen-owned luxury vehicles wirelessly without the key, and compiled their findings in an academic paper. The scientists claimed that the research was intended to increase security for everyone, and while that might be true if the codes needed to crack the secret algorithm were never to be published, they planned to publish the paper at the Usenix Security Symposium in Washington, DC, next month.

Fortunately for those who own a The Guardian reports, recognizing that the information could result in the theft of many vehicles. The other two scientists, Roel Verdult and Baris Ege from Radboud University Nijmegen, won’t attend, either.

The algorithm, called Megamos Crypto, allows the key to communicate with the vehicle by deciphering and reordering the codes sent between the two, acting both as a translator of sorts and a safety barrier. With the wrong key in hand – or no key – the car won’t function, unless the algorithm has been bypassed another way.

For its part, Volkswagen was actually okay with the paper – Dismantling Megamos Cryptos: Wirelessly Lockpicking a Vehicle Immobiliser – being published, but only if the offending codes were redacted. The scientists, of course, refused.

We appreciate the scientists’ effort to increase security by learning the weaknesses of the systems that protect us, but we would rather not have that information in the public domain. With the codes in the wrong hands, who knows Comments

2013 Volkswagen full line parked in field

2013 APEAL Study, which looks at which brands have the most appealing cars based on sales figures, dealer inventory, brand loyalty, transaction and trade-in prices. The study was revamped for 2013, and places a larger focus on the new tech and infotainment options available to customers. All told, study participants gauged their vehicles on 77 different attributes, delivering a score out of a 1,000 points.

The best brand overall was Ram, which received a very respectable 817. The industry average for this year’s study was 795, with 16 brands, all of which were mainstream, falling below the average.

In August, 2009, as the scuttled merger of relinquished a ten-percent stake in itself to Qatar Holdings as well as options it held on 17 percent of VW shares. The sale meant that, for the first time since the founding of the company 61 years before, an entity outside the Porsche and Piech families had a say in the running of PAHSE.

Buying that ten-percent stake back returns full ownership to the two families, the holding company’s sole possession being ownership of 50.7 percent of VW’s common shares. The price paid wasn’t disclosed, but at market rates the purchase would be worth close to $1.25 billion. Qatar intends to hold onto the 17-percent stake it has in Volkswagen.

Employing complex scientific formulas and methodologies probably best described as “Whatever we felt like choosing,” Automobile has named its All-Stars for the 2013 model year. The 11 vehicles earned their trophies for being “the best and most significant” offerings to the mag’s staff and contributors, and while we were surprised to see a couple of them on the list, none of them were shocking. In no particular order, they are:

  • Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (seen above)
  • Porsche Boxster
  • Scion FR-S
  • Audi A7
  • Ram 1500
  • Honda Accord
  • Mazda CX-5
  • Ford Focus

Random notes: The least expensive vehicle on the list was the Ford Focus at $16,995 however, it was the $24,495 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab; the GTI was viewed through the history of its birthplace, Wolfsburg.
