California history

The “California” is not sold in (California) USA/NA although demand is high, the name “California’ was previously used by Volkswagen for the Westfalia-built campervans since 1988. Westfalia was the Official Manufacturer of motorhomes for VW. When the Westfalia company was bought by DaimlerChrysler in 2001, VW decided to build and design their own campervan range, based on the legendary Transporter range.

The California launched in August, 2003. In 2004 two design studies were presented at the Caravan Salon in Dsseldorf: California Beach and California Tramper. VWCV expanded the range in 2005 with the California (Multivan/Kombi) Beach, to bridge the gap between the Multivan/Kombi people carriers and the California.

At the 2007 Caravan Salon in Dsseldorf, VWCV launched the new California Beach with pop top bed, as seen in the higher specified versions of the California range.

Bedding

The “Good Night Package” comes with curtains, and the ability to fold the seats into a bed for two.

Indoor/outdoor features

A folding table integrated within the sliding door is able to be used outside and inside with two folding chairs.

Combined with the rear seats, the front seats swivel 180 degrees, so you can have a meeting/meal/break with the rear seat passengers.

Other options

California Beach now has the option of the elevating “pop top” aluminium roof, with bed space of 120x200cm in Germany.

Bedding

The California comes with an electro-hydraulically elevating aluminium roof with bed space of 120x200cm.

The rear seating in the California can be arranged to make lower level double bed measuring 200x114cm.

Kitchen

The kitchen comprises a sink, a two burner gas cooktop powered by a 2.8 kg gas cylinder, a 42 litre compressor fridge, two kitchen storage cupboards with drawers integrated in the design are also standard.

Indoor/outdoor features

A standard fitment twin water tanks both hold 30 litres of water, one for drinking water, the other for foul/waste water.

There is an optional 250 cm awning which mounts above the sliding door, and a foldaway table and two chairs are hidden in the tailgate hatch.

Like two ships passing in the night, our long-term 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT and 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Street edition briefly met in person last Saturday morning before their driver – myself and Senior Editor Lavrinc – swapped keys, turned around and headed back to our respective ends of the country.

The Great Long-Term Vehicle Swap of 2010 went off without a hitch, and because we know more than a few of you are curious, you’ll find a table after the jump that shows fuel consumption results for each vehicle on my own portion of the trip. But first, here are some other interesting factoids.

VW to build stretched version of new Passat in China

China is getting its own version of the new Passat, and, big surprise, it’s going to have a stretched wheelbase. China Car Times is reporting that the embiggened version of the next generation Passat will be 120mm (about 4.5 inches) longer than the sedan other markets will receive to allow for a roomier back seat.

The stretched version of the Passat makes sense because in the Chinese market, there exists a bigger group of customers more eager to be driven in luxury than to have a vehicle that is fun to drive. And since V-Dub’s sedan is used in China as a livery vehicle, the extra 4.5 inches will come in handy. The stretch Passat, which will be built in China, will reportedly arrive in dealerships early in 2011.

VW Commercial Vehicles Announce new Pick Up Name

The new Volkswagen pickup, showcased as a concept last year and due to be launched in Europe in 2010, is to be called the Amarok.

The new name means ‘wolf’ in the language of the Inuit, one of the Eskimo people who live in northern Canada and Greenland who highly regard the wolf as king of the wilderness and a figure of robustness, endurance and superiority. It translates into ‘he loves stones’ in the languages spoken in South America.

‘This name fits the characteristics of our pickup perfectly, which will set new standards in its class,’ says Stephan Schaller, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. ‘We took great care selecting this name, which can be used globally and is meant to invoke positive associations in all relevant international markets. The Amarok is a powerful and robust vehicle with great stamina – just like the wolf,’ he continued.

Developed from scratch, the Amarok will be launched as a double-cab pickup with four-wheel drive, while a single-cab version will be introduced later. It will be powered by Volkswagen’s powerful yet efficient, next generation common rail turbo diesel engines which will achieve class leading fuel consumption and emissions.

The Amarok is an important new model in the strategic growth plans for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and will be produced at its Pacheco plant near Buenos Aires in Argentina. It will be launched first in South America in early 2010, followed by Central America in Spring 2010, then Russia and Europe in the summer, as well as Africa and Australia. Prices, specifications and on-sale dates for the UK will be announced next year.

Launched two years ago at the 2005 Geneva Show, the 2009 VW Passat is believed to undergo face lifting.

According to the German magazine Autozeitung, VW will proceed to a facelift in 2009. And it will be seen most probably at the 2009 Geneva Show, with aesthetic changes including a redesigned front end inspired from the upcoming Tiguan. The German magazine reports that VW will also substitute the present 1.6FSI and 2.0FSI engines with the Groups new 122Hp 1.4TSI and 160Hp 1.8TFSI motors, which will also include 1.6, 2.0 and 3.2 V6 engines.

Some analysts say this speculation of the German magazine arises because of Volkswagens aim to continually increase the company’s sales and also to attract the US market. The engine substitution, however, is expected to occur quite earlier, maybe even in this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Volkswagen will add a low-roofed wagon model in 2009 to accompany next year’s sleek, Passat-based, four-door “coupe”. The wagon has the packaging and the design theme of the Dodge Magnum, which is said to be a reflection of former VW product expert Wolfgang Bernhard’s time at the Chrysler Group.

As compared to the standard Passat wagon, the premium model has a lower roofline, a wider stance, and a less upright tailgate. Added to this, the seating height is lowered and the buckets will give heating, ventilation, and massage functions. Along with this are inflatable g-force-compensating cushions. Extending all the way through the cabin is the center console. However, despite a low roofline, the wagon’s cargo bay accommodates 21 cubic feet of stuff.

A 200-hp, 2.0-liter turbo four and a high-performance version of the 3.6-liter VR6, which will develop nearly 300 hp are included in the engine options. These are paired either with a six-speed manual or an improved, seven-speed twin-clutch DSG.

Analysts say prices have not yet been determined, but one insider claims that the Magnum-esque VW will cost only about 00. That is more than a comparable Passat wagon.

Looking at the older version of Passat, the 2007 Volkswagen Passat sedan is offered as a four-door sedan or five-door wagon. It is available with a 200-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or a 280-hp, 3.6-liter V6. Four-cylinder sedans can be ordered with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Wagons and V6s, however, come with the automatic only.

With innovated VW Passat parts, all Passat models are expected to raise VW sales during their respective season of lunch in the market.
